Cowboy Star Restaurant & Butcher Shop, Downtown San Diego
This is the “steak and potatoes” restaurant that delivers the consistency and quality you want in a steakhouse. While I prefer to sit at the bar (for people-watching), the western-themed decor and music is sure to get you in the mood for their scrumptious 14oz rib eye. the staff are accommodating and personable. Happy hour can be the best time to see this place in action, especially before a Padres game or a concert at Petco Park.
My order recommendations: Cowboy Star Bread Service (don’t hesitate, just order them), 8oz Filet Mignon, the 14 oz Ribeye Steak, and for some sharable bites: Mac & Cheese, Foraged Mushrooms, or the C-Star Caesar.
Claires on Cedros, Solana Beach
This is a go-to for having your pancakes with some great people watching. Their menu includes lunch items like their Farmhouse burger. But to be honest, I love a good plate of breakfast food to start my day. Hot Tip: you can put your party on the waitlist via Google Maps.
Recommendations: Eggs, Toast, & a Side (decent-sized portions), the Classic or Seared Salmon Benedict, the Caramelized Tahitian Vanilla Bean French Toast, Poblano White Chicken Chili, and the cold pressed grapefuit juice. Their coffee is pretty good, and I do like their ‘Lavender Honey Cortado.’
JAviers, La Jolla
Once you walk into this place, you will feel the experience of the great service and quality Javier’s has for each guest. Whenever friends or family come into town, I make a reservation here and come hungry. Complete with chips and salsa, I can honestly say that for the money you’re paying
Recommendations: Ceviche, the ‘Cabo Azul’ enchiladas (lobster, shrimp, and crab), the Fajitas (sharable for sure), the Corte Vaquero, or the Birria (under the ‘Guisados.’) The Churros are good too, if you’ve got room!
MAbels Gone Fishing,
Almost every local chef I talked to said this place is on their list of best restaurants in the San Diego area. This Iberian-Californian spot has a menu that changes with what’s fresh, what the chef knows his customers will enjoy, and I respect that. Portions are small but ordering a Seared Seabass and plates of different ‘Carnes Curadas’ (cured meats) with spanish tortillas is your starter for a flavorful, memorable night.
Recommendations: I’d start with the Daily Oyster selection and/or the Kanpachi. Then order plates of the cured meats (i.e., jamon iberico bellota) and seasonal cheese, and the Endive + Snowcrab* (* seasonal.)

Papa Haydn, Alphabet district
Every time I’m back in my home state, I always have a meal at this restaurant in the Alphabet District. There are many stores to shop around the neighborhood, and a nice lunch or dinner at Papa Haydn’s is great for a nice date or family celebration. Tasteful menu options local to the area, and not extremely overpriced, which is key when you spent all your money at the farmer’s market.
Recommendations: Wild Chinook Salmon salad, French Onion Soup, or the Risotto.

First impressions of this place were the following: parking was pretty easy, the smell as you enter the door is euphoric and delicious, and why haven’t I heard of this place before?!
Great for any size of friends or family, and the aesthetics of the place is “so Portland.”
Recommendations: French Charcuterie board, Capicola Reuben on rye at Lunch, Braised Beef Short Ribs at Dinner. Drinks: Vino De Anna (Sicily), Bracco Italiano (Beefeater gin, etc.), or Olympia Old Fashioned

Not all restaurants are all vegan in the land of green grass and home of the Trail Blazers. This new find, Departure is an Asian Fusion spot downtown that is more than just tasty crisp pork belly. They have GF Ishiyaki Steak that’s worth saving your appetite, and a view from the restaurant is just adds to the experience of being in beautiful city.
Recommendations: Blood Orange Sherbet, Big Eye Tuna Poke, Ishiyaki Steak, Crispy Pork Belly, or Ozeki sake.

The Bayou
From the neon sign outside, to the casual vibe inside (and outside dining area), this place is one for any occasion. My first experience at this Salt Lake staple was tasting their crawfish étouffée and polishing off my palate with their… deep friend twinkies! Located not too far from late-night hot spots to continue the fun!
Recommendations: Spicy Chicken Gumbo, Deep Fried Twinkies, Cajun Veggie Burger, and an Epic Imperial Red.

If you’re looking to listen to live music, sit back in your jeans and cowboy boots (or biker boots), this is the place. From the garden patio, to a true laid-back vibe, it’s located just outside downtown Salt Lake.
Recommendations: Beerhive Beer Mac, Cowboy Burger (add braised kale, if you’re feeling frisky!), and check the Event Calendar for who’s playing… Bruce Springsteen? lol maybe
Sweet Lake Biscuits & Limeade

Upon living in SLC for two years, and returning a year later, my sister took me here for brunch… I was sad because I could have been there almost every Saturday. The classic diner feel, scrumptious menu, and outside eating for those who are needing that perfect instagram picture, this place is for you.
Recommendations: Conspiracy Cakes, Honeydew Cucumber Limeade, and Hoss.

Kale & Clover - Scottsdale, AZ
One of my first places I fell in love with while living in North Scottsdale, and it meets all the healthy requirements: local juices available, open space for indoor or patio seating, and fresh menu choices that you build or choose for meeting the macro and micro nutrients for you.
Recommendations: Kaleidoscope Illuminate, Superfood Salad (add Salmon/Chicken), Hummus Wrap, and the Cauliflower "Wings".”

Salty Sow - Scottsdale, AZ
This restaurant is for those special occasions, or bringing family into town for a delectable meal that isn’t what they’d expect. My first experience was eating stuffed mushrooms (which were cooked to perfection), and attentive staff to keep my drinks and courses flowing perfectly. Bring your appetite, but the portions are too large.
Recommendations: Sedona Sunset Mojito, Fried Green Tomatoes and Guac, Crackling’ Duroc Pork Belly, and the Butterscotch Boudino.

Worth Takeaway - Mesa, AZ
This place was just blocks from my old house, and when my sister and her husband took me here, I was hooked. I literally told anyone I knew about it. The food is so flavorful, the amount is just enough (or even share.) Also the vibe is relaxed with an open garden patio, and timely service for what you’re about to enjoy… tasty, local food.
Recommendations: Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, the French Dip (comes with au jus), any RAD juice, or Breakfast: the Breakfast Burrito (life-changing.)

When you have had a long week of work, or just want to treat yourself on a crisp weekend morning, this place… is just the cherry on top. My friend let me know about this place, and we drove 30 miles from Palo Alto to get some morning goodies. Besides opening the door to the best smell, here’ some ideas for ya:
Recommendations: the butter crossiant, guava & cream cheese pastelito, ham and cheese morning bun, raspberry violet twice-baked, and don’t forget your espresso.
Pre-Ordering Available.
Saison - south beach
For the special ocassion evenings, celebrating a new job or engagement (to be?), this place was quite memorable for me. I was on a date, and I never felt more posh than being greeted at the door, wined and dined all evening, and somehow didn’t feel like “I shouldn’t be here. I buy Target tee shirts for goodness sakes!” While most evenings are “special,” this Three-Michelin star restaurant will surely leave you with the bar set high.
Reservations NEEDED.
Recommendations: Chef Discovery Menu (including Monkfish liver, Fort Bragg sea urchin, Dungeness Crab & grilled sea greens, etc.)

Located off Market Street by the beautiful Dolores Park is this Breakfast & Brunch spot that can never cease to amaze me. Whether you’re in the mood for something large & savory, or curing a hangover and just need pancakes, you will find the perfect bite here.

This restaurants serves your cravings for breakfast food, and also nails the lunch menu as well. From Seared Wild Sea Scallops to Eggs Florentine, the ambiance of the streets of downtown “PA” will give you a feeling of city life in the peninsula area. Just down the street from Stanford University, you can’t go wrong with the following items:
Chili Encrusted Fried Calamari (because… appetizers)
Grilled Salmon with Basil Aioli (add a Pino Gris or a fruity Rose)
The “ABC” Burger (1/2 lb) [ask or side salad, it’s default side is fries]
Seasonal Belgian Waffle (brunch) [sliced peaches… delish!]
Dessert: Baked Meyer Lemon Custard

manresa bread, los gatos
Located in the quirky, yet busy area of the south bay, this bakery is so “instagrammable,” yet the smells of hand-crafted monkey bread and pain au chocolate is sure to fit any carb-craving. They have other locations around the south bay, but this location is primo. I do recommend my favorites:
Breton Style Kougin Amann (catering available)
Pain Au Chocolate (paired with an Almond Milk Latte, or Cappucino)
Levain (spread with fig preserves and prosciutto, or with Kerrygold butter)
a local MB (Manresa Bread) mug (because we always need a new coffee mug)

tacos el grullense, redwood city
My first time coming to this place was after a roller derby. My roommate and her friends invited me for tacos down the street, and as it was Tuesday, I obviously said yes. So glad I found this place as it’s: well priced, sometimes crowded but not overrated, and tasty AF. My favorites are below (the menu has all your cravings btw):
Flautas (add a Coca-Cola, the Mexican Coke is truly a match with ALL THE THINGS)
Chimichanga (you better be hungry, or get some napkins. Maybe add some tapotio)
California Burrito
Tacos ($1.75 each!)

BlackBelly Market, Boulder
This place is a meat-lovers second home. I fell in love with the atmosphere, and the locally sourced foods they feature on their menu. They’re open for Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner. While I could just order their homemade ice cream everyday, below are some of my favorites to get:
Blackbelly Burger
Delizioza Buratta
Rusty Heart (cocktail)
Koji Cured Pork

El Five, Denver
If you’re looking for a “wow” factor on a date, or just want to delicious food with a killer view of downtown Denver, this joint is for you! From Harissa Eggplant fries, to the luscious dessert menu at Lunch or Dinner, I was in awe I had not been to this place before. Again, the view is awesome. Here below are some of my favorites to try:
Shrimp & Calamari A La Plancha
Spreads of the Med
Dragees (perfect amount of chocolate for dessert)
Cauliflower Yukfa
Souce: wander-lust.nz
potager restaurant & wine bar, denver
Another hidden gem with a great atmosphere, and serving their guests farm-to-table. If I lived in the area, I would most likely eat here… every week. The daily specials are actually delicious, and the staff are just as pleasant. Below are some favorites to try when you’re in the mood for some wholesome nutrition:
Spinach Fettuccine with a lemon-pine nut chutney
Scallops with Concord Grape Misoyaki
Coconut Curry Mussels with Pumpkin Chapati
Analemma ‘Mosier Hills’, Mencia, Columbia Gorge
Domaine Saint Nicolas ‘Fiefs-Vendeens’, Pinot Noir, France
Good Eats: Vancouver
Grounds for Coffee, WEst Point Grey
If you need a sweet treat before a day of exploring, this is your place for a delectable cinnamon roll. They have locations around the city and a decent amount of seating to truly enjoy your breakfast of champions. From their homemade muffins to savory foods like samosas, this cafe entices you to find a new favorite pastry and coffee combo. I have been following their social media account and it’s entertaining and mouth-watering.
Recommendations: “the best looking” cinnamon roll, 4oz Cortado, gluten-free lemon muffin, or the espresso chocolate banana muffin.
Ramen Danbo Kitsilano. kitsilano
A friend of mine who has owned a few sushi restaurants lives in Vancouver, and when he came to show us around, this was our first lunch stop. I was technically on a strict, carb-heavy diet for an upcoming triathlon so I was excited I could customize my ramen without sounding like “that customer.” Parking off 4th Ave can be tricky, but this area has so many cool shops, cafes, etc. the walk around a block or two is worth coming to this location.
Recommendations: order of Gyoza, Shio Ramen with thin + standard (firmness) noodles, light broth, and a standard amount of “karadare” (amount of umami spice.) If you’re still hungry or need variety, the Chashu Pork Donburi is tasty. They have gluten-free and vegan options, if applicable.
Jo’s Italian Deli,
After just finishing my 100km triathlon, my support crew took me here to celebrate. The menu is simple but has an array of sandwiches, pastas, and combination of things to fill your appetite. When you walk in, to your left are a lot of Italian groceries including pastas, sauces, cured meats, and other staples to make you put on some Dean Martin on the stereo, and get to cookin’ yourself.
Recommendations: Chicken Pesto Sandwich (small, if your hungry; large, if you’re either really hungry or want to snack later), Radiatore Rose (not too saucy, but spicy pasta dish), or the Spicy Salami Sandwich (small or large.)
Good Eats: Oahu
Honolulu
Kona Coffee Perveyors, Honolulu
Located in the International Marketplace, this is your new first stop of your vacation day in Waikiki. We honestly found this place because the other brunch spots were already packed. This cafe isn’t just a menu of cold brew and 100% Kona coffee brewed fresh, but a quality cafe with a full pastry team churning out award-winning pastries like kougin amanns (a croissant but compact) or the lilikoi bostocks (little bites of Hawaiian joy.) The line can get up to 35 minutes long around 9:30am, but die down around lunch time. Also, don’t be shy to ask one of the employees for a complementary taste of their coffee beans. Being informed of which bean is for you makes for a more confident purchase.
Recommendations: Avocado Toast (perfect size and they cut it for you), two Lilikoi Madelines, a Classic Kougin Amann, a 6oz bag of Kona Mauna Loa, and any coffee on the menu. Note when ordering your coffee: order it “for here” as the taste of a ceramic cup versus a plastic cup is that much better!
Alii Fish Market, Honolulu
There are many places that look like “the best poke spot,” but this is one that doesn’t disappoint and is always fresh. I was not initially up to raw tuna and seaweed for a meal, but once you’ve tried almost every grocery store and yelp top-picks, you start to find what you like. This place was recommended by our building staff and now I compare other poke bowls to this spot.
Recommendations: BYOB (2 Choice): Build your own bowl with sushi rice, Spicy Creamy Garlic Ahi, and Kaffir Lemongrass Ahi for the perfect mix of bold and fresh flavors. It's a great way to try two of Aliʻi Fish Market's most popular poke options in one meal. Also, the Hawaiian Style Ahi Poke Bowl: this meal highlights fresh ahi with traditional Hawaiian seasonings that let the quality of the fish shine. It's a simple choice that's perfect for anyone wanting a true island poke experience.
Merriman’s Honolulu
While this isn’t right on the beach like Duke’s, this casual dining spot more on their menu than the macadamia nut crusted mahi-mahi. This location on Oahu is within the new Ward Village area, and the modern aesthetic is just part of the Hawaiian vibes I experience every time we’ve been here. Seating at the bar is just as good as seating in the dining area, and while I am not a huge drinker, their Mai Tai rivals the Royal Hawaiians and Duke’s. Portions are sizable, but if you catch an early dinner, you’ll have room for dessert and sunset!
Recommendations: The Bag O’ Biscuits or the Taro Hummus plate to start. Also, the Cast Iron Chicken or the Crispy Pork Shank. They do have a decent happy hour (i.e., fish tacos or the smash burger.) For dessert, the Lilikoi Posset.
